NOTICE: This gaging station, as well as 9 other gaging stations and 2 water-quality monitors in the Barnegat Bay watershed, will be discontinued on October 1, 2014, due to lack of funding. The gages were installed in 2011 as part of the Barnegat Bay Flow and Water-Quality Monitoring Program funded by New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and USGS which will conclude on September 30, 2014.
The water temperature data for this station are temporary and will only be displayed for 120 days. Although the instrumentation is calibrated at least once/year, the temporary classification means that documented routine inspections and other quality assurance measures are not performed that would make the data acceptable for archival, retrieval, or future use in general scientific or interpretive studies.
Data are tidally affected--Astronomical tides cause significant cycles of approximately 24.84 hours at this site. Because a different portion of the 24.84-hour tidal cycle is averaged in successive daily (24-hour) computations, a systematic secondary oscillation, unrelated to basin hydrology and having a period of about two weeks may be apparent in daily data. At this site, positive discharge (ebb tide) is generally to the north direction and negative discharge (flood tide) is to the south.
LOCATION.--Lat 39°47'54", long 74°15'01" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Lacey Township, Ocean County, NJ, Hydrologic Unit 02040301, on right bank, 20 ft downstream from bridge on State Highway 532, 1.5 mi downstream from reservoir at Wells Mill, and 3.2 mi northeast of Brookville.DRAINAGE AREA.--7.43 mi2.
PERIOD OF RECORD.--Continuous discharge July 1965 to December 1984, June 2011 to current year.
GAGE.--Water-stage recorder, crest stage gage and staff gage. Prior to July 8, 2013 gage located on left bank 20 ft upstream from bridge on State Highway 532 at same datum.
COOPERATION.--Funding for this gage is provided by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
