LOCATION - Lat 42°42'32", long 73°11'50" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Berkshire County, MA, Hydrologic Unit 02020003, on left bank 0.11 mi upstream from bridge on State Highway 2 at Williamstown and 0.81 mi upstream from mouth. Prior to July 12, 2016, on left bank 0.1 mi upstream from bridge on State Highway 2 at Williamstown and 0.8 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 42.6 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR MA-RI-84-1: 1977-78(P), 1979, 1980-83(P). The maximum discharges for water years 2018 and 2019 were revised on Jul. 14, 2022, based on changes to the stage-discharge rating. Discharge for the period Feb. 3, 2022, to Feb. 4, 2022, was revised on Jan. 11, 2023, based on changes to the ice estimated period.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Discharge: September 1949 to current year. Water-quality records: water years 1967-69.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 610.55 ft above NAVD of 1988. Prior to July 12, 2016, water-stage recorder on left bank 50 ft downstream at same datum.
COOPERATION - Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Office of Water Resources.
REMARKS -
  • Water Years 2017-22: Records good except those above 500 cfs and those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
  • WY2016: Records good, except for periods of ice effect, Jan. 4-9, Jan. 13 to Feb. 24, and period of no gage-height record, Feb. 25, which are poor.
  • WY2015: Records good, except for the period of ice effect, Jan. 8 to Apr. 3, and periods of no gage-height record, Jan. 14 to Apr. 17 and Aug. 27, which are poor.
  • WY2014: Records fair, except those for estimated daily discharges and those from Jan. 31, 2014 to Sept. 17, 2014, which are poor.

  • The historical maximum peak flow of 4,140 cfs on Aug. 28, 2011 is based on rating curve extended above 1,600 cfs on basis of slope area measurement at gage height 6.35 ft (at former location). The maximum peak stage of 6.67 ft on Aug. 28, 2011 is from high-water mark (at former location).
