02024752 JAMES RIVER AT BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY NEAR BIG ISLAND, VA
LOCATION - Lat 37°33'19", long 79°22'03" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Amherst County, VA, Hydrologic Unit 02080203, on downstream side of Blue Ridge Parkway bridge, 150 ft from left bank, 1.5 mi northwest of Big Island, and 7.9 mi southeast of Glasgow.
DRAINAGE AREA - 3,076 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - August 2006 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 600.80 ft NGVD of 1929.
COOPERATION - Records were provided by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality - Water Division.
REMARKS - Some diurnal fluctuation caused by powerplants upstream from station. Flow regulated since December 1979 by Lake Moomaw (station 02011795) 108.9 mi upstream; since 1984 by Back Creek Lake 136.9 mi upstream; and since January 1985 by Little Back Creek Lake 140 mi upstream, amount unknown. Maximum discharge of 47,800 ft³/s from rating curve extended above 46,400 ft³/s, on basis of records for other stations in James River Basin.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Instantaneous low flow, 210 ft³/s, Feb. 6, 2007, may have gone lower. Result of freezeup.
