02167000 SALUDA RIVER AT CHAPPELLS, SC
LOCATION - Lat 34°10'28", long 81°51'51" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Saluda County, SC, Hydrologic Unit 03050109, on downstream side of bridge on State Highway 39 at Chappells, 6.7 mi downstream from dam at Lake Greenwood, 9.8 mi upstream from Little River, and at mile 52.3.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1,360 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - Gage datum was revised on October 29, 2020, based on an error in the determination of the gage datum.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1926 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1303. Gage-height records collected since 1905 are contained in reports of National Weather Service.
GAGE - Data collection platform. Datum of gage is 362.12 ft above NAVD of 1988. Oct. 1, 1926 to Sept. 30, 1939, nonrecording or recording gage at site 300 ft downstream at datum 363.79 ft above NGVD of 1929. Oct. 1, 1939 to Oct. 7, 1964, recording gage at present site and at datum 363.89 ft above NGVD of 1929. October 7, 1964 to May 18, 1993 at site and at datum 362.89 ft above NGVD 1929, May 18, 1993 to May 25, 2005, recording gage at site 50 ft downstream and at current datum, May 2005 to current year.
REMARKS - Gage-height records are generally good. Discharge records are generally good except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Additional details on the accuracy of the records can be obtained by contacting the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center at gs-w-sc_nwisweb_data_inquiries@usgs.gov.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - The flood of Aug. 26, 1908 reached a stage of 36.7 ft (present site and datum), from reports of National Weather Service.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum Discharge, 63,700 cfs, Oct 2, 1929, (from a rating curve extended logarithmically above 29,000 cfs). Maximum Gage height, 32.50 ft, Oct 2, 1929.  (Adjusted to present datum).
