USGS Water-Year Summary 2023
03289300 SOUTH ELKHORN CREEK NEAR MIDWAY, KY
LOCATION - Lat 38°08'27", long 84°38'43" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Scott County, KY, Hydrologic Unit 05100205, on right bank, 5.0 feet upstream from bridge on U.S. Route 62/421, 2.2 miles southeast of Midway, 6.5 miles downstream from Town Branch, and at mile 27.6.
DRAINAGE AREA - 105 mi². (97.133 mi² determined from, drainage boundaries from OFR 96-478 and additional digitized boundaries, automatically by ARC/INFO software in June 2003. A small portion of the watershed is karst terrain and does not contribute significantly to stream flow. If high water measurements are made at Moore's Mill RD, the area is 105.74 mi² per the afore mentioned methods. An earlier determination 105 mi², of which about 21 mi² does not contribute directly to surface runoff, was believed to have been with a planimeter.) Discharge measurements obtained at the Moore's Mill bridge should be multiplied by .92 to obtain correct discharge for gage site.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - September 1982 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 779.73 feet above NAVD 1988 datum, formerly 780.02 feet above NAVD 88 (vertcon) and formerly 780.56 feet above NGVD of 1929.
REMARKS - Operation of two low-head turbines by Weisenberger Feed Mill located approximately 1.0 mile upstream from gage causes some regulation which is very evident in the gage height record.  Water is diverted from the Kentucky River for use by the City of Lexington and is discharged into Town Branch at a site 17 miles above gage.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 12,300 ft³/s, Mar. 2, 1997, gage height 26.37 ft.
