LOCATION - Lat 46°54'56", long 98°00'38" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in SE 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.28, T.140 N., R.58 W., Barnes County, ND, Hydrologic Unit 09020204, on left bank 100 ft downstream from College Dam in Valley City and at mile 253.0.
DRAINAGE AREA - 7,810 mi² of which 5,700 mi² probably is noncontributing. including 3,800 mi² in closed basins.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD -

DAILY DISCHARGE.--April 1919, April 1937 to September 1975; March to September 1995, March to September 1996, March to September 2002; October 1979 to current year (annual maximum discharge only). Records for July 1938, published in WSP 855, have been found to be unreliable and should not be used.

DAILY GAGE HEIGHT.--October 1979 to current year.

DISCHARGE.--October 2021 to current year.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder and concrete control. Datum of gage is 1,200.58 ft above North American Vertical Datum 1988 (NAVD88, Survey done by USGS) and 1,199.27 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum 1929 (NGVD29, levels by Army Corps of Engineers).

Previous locations and datums are as follows:

March 18, 1938, to October 13, 1938; non-recording gage at present site and datum of 1,199.27 ft above NGVD29 

March to Aug. 1919; non-recording gage half a mile upstream, datum unknown. 

REMARKS -

Flow regulated by Lake Ashtabula 13 mi upstream (see station 05057500). Small diversions above station for municipal supply.

Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for the 2019 and 2021 water years, when record was fair.  Estimated discharges are poor, unless otherwise noted.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum peak flow, 7,940 ft³/s, April 17, 2009, peak stage, 20.59 ft; maximum peak stage, 20.69 ft, April 13, 2009; minimum daily stage (since October 1979), 2.41 ft, October 2, 1990.
