05227530 MISSISSIPPI RIVER DIVERSION NEAR AITKIN, MN
LOCATION - Lat 46°35'30", long 93°41'13" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Aitkin County, MN, Hydrologic Unit 07010104, on upstream side of bridge 1.2 miles downstream from entrance control structure, 1 mile upstream from Little Willow River and 3.8 miles north of Aitkin.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - April 1955 to September 2010, discharge measurements made in conjunction with site 05227500. October 2010 to current year, site has its own station number.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 1182.63 ft. NAVD88. Prior to Sept. 23, 2020 datum was 1,182.02 ft. above sea level (NGVD of 1929). Apr. 9, 1955 to Apr. 10, 1956, non-recording gage at site 4 mi downstream at different datum. Apr. 11, 1956 to Sept. 30, 1967, non-recording gage at same site at datum 3.0 ft. higher. October 1967 to May 2014, non-recording gage. June 2014 to current year, water-stage recorder.
REMARKS - Flow regulated by Winnibigoshish Lake, Leech Lake, Pokegama Lake, and Big Sandy Lake. Water diverted at medium and high stages into Aitkin diversion channel 6.5 mi above station 05227500, bypasses station and returns to river 15.5 mi below station 05227500. Diversion began Apr. 2, 1955.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 7,440 ft³/s, gage-height 19.35 ft., June 28, 2012. Prior to the 2012 WY this site was operated in conjunction with site 05227500 Mississippi R at Aitkin, MN. Peak values for this site are known to be higher prior to 2012 and are not reflected in this section.
