LOCATION - Lat 39°44'28.6", long 92°02'27.7" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in SW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.17, T.57 N., R.10 W., Shelby County, MO, Hydrologic Unit 07110005, on right bank near downstream end of bridge on State Highway 15, 3.0 mi north of Shelbina, 15.0 mi upstream from Black Creek, and at mile 122.3.
DRAINAGE AREA - 481 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Apr 1930 to Feb 1934, Mar 1934 to Sep 1972. Mar 1988 to current year. Prior to Mar 1988 published as "Salt River near Shelbina, Mo.". Fragmentary record prior to Oct 1933. Monthly discharge only for period Oct 1933 to Feb 1934 published in WSP 1308.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage with concrete control since Mar 25, 1988. Datum of gage is 664.28 feet above the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Prior to Mar 1, 1934, nonrecording gage at site 100 ft downstream at present datum; Mar 1, 1934, to Nov 2, 1962, water-stage recorder at site 175 ft downstream at present datum; Nov 3, 1962, to Sep 30, 1972, water-stage recorder at site 100 ft upstream at present datum; Oct 1, 1972, to Sep 30, 1979, gage-height records collected by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, at site 100 ft downstream; Oct 1, 1979, to Sep 1981, gage-height data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey at site 100 ft downstream.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records is discussed in the annual Station Analysis archived at the USGS MO Water Science Center.    Water is pumped from river at the gage by the city of Shelbina.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of Jun 1928 reached a stage of 23.54 ft, from floodmarks, discharge 18,000 ft³/s.
