LOCATION - Lat 43°45'09", long 101°31'28" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SE 1/4 SE 1/4 sec.30, T.3 S., R.22 E., Jackson County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10140202, on right abutment of  State Highway 73 bridge, 5.2 mi upstream from Pass Creek, 5.3 mi downstream from Cottonwood Creek, and 5.8 mi south of Kadoka.
DRAINAGE AREA - 4,960 mi² of which 7 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1279: 1944(M), 1948. WDR SD-10-1: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - July 1942 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2,123.80 ft. above NAVD88.  Prior to conversion to NAVD 88, datum of gage was 2,122.18 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Jun. 14, 1949, nonrecording gage, and Jun. 14, 1949, to Mar. 8, 1955, water-stage recorder at site 0.5 mi downstream at datum of 2,122.18 ft above NGVD of 1929.  For the period Mar. 9, 1955, to May 17, 1957, nonrecording gage at site 0.2 mi downstream at datum of 2,122.18 ft above NGVD of 1929. For the period May 18, 1957 to Mar. 25, 2019, water-stage recorder at site 0.2 mi downstream at datum of 2,122,18 ft above NGVD of 1929.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for Aug. 28, 2014 to Sept. 30, 2014, and Oct. 1, 2017 to Sept. 30, 2018 and Oct. 24, 2018 to Oct. 21, 2019, which are fair and May 5-18, 2015, Jul. 22 to Oct. 7, 2021, Oct. 30, 2021 to Apr. 15, 2022 and estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. Satellite data-collection platform at station.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of Jun. 4, 1942, reached a stage of 16.24 ft, from floodmarks (discharge, about 32,000 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 16,000 ft³/s). Floods of Mar. 8, 1905, and in spring of 1927 were 1 or 2 ft higher than flood of Jun. 4, 1942, from information by local residents.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 21,700 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 16,000 ft³/s, Jun. 7, 1951, gage height, 13.83 ft, site then in use; maximum gage height 16.18 ft., discharge 21,300 ft³/s, May 20, 1982, site then in use. Maximum discharge, 18,300 ft³/s, May 23, 2019, gage height 17.57 ft, current site; minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Oct. 11, 1943, no flow for many days in most years.
