LOCATION - Lat 40°02'04", long 101°32'34" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in sec.19, T.1 N., R.37 W., Dundy County, NE, Hydrologic Unit 10250002, on right bank at downstream side of bridge on U.S. Highway 34, 0.7 mi southwest of Benkelman, 2.7 mi upstream from mouth of South Fork Republican River, and 11.5 mi downstream from Rock Creek.
DRAINAGE AREA - 4,880 mi² of which 3,650 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - --WSP 1310: 1895. WSP 1919: 1952, 1956.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1894 to September 1895 (published as North Fork Republican River at Benkelman), October 1902 to November 1906, October 1946 to September 1994. October 2014 to current. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1310.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry. Datum of gage Oct. 1, 2014 to current is 2,976.34 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). Prior to Dec. 17, 1946, nonrecording gages at several sites within 1.5 mi of present site at various datums; Dec. 17, 1946 to May 26, 1972, water stage recorder at present site and datum 2,975.34 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum 1929 (NGVD29), May 27, 1972 to Aug. 11, 1978, at site 150 ft downstream at datum 2,975.34 ft above NGVD29, and Aug. 12, 1978 to April 3, 1995 at present site and datum 2,975.34 ft above NGVD29.
REMARKS - For water years 2015 onward, records fair to good except for estimated daily discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. Natural flow is affected by irrigation development above station.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 6,040 ft³/s, September 7, 1951 gage height 7.58 ft datum 2,975.34 ft. Maximum gage height , 9.35 ft, July 24, 2020, discharge 2960 ft³/s.
