LOCATION - Lat 31°04'45", long 98°00'59" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Lampasas County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 12070203, on downstream right bank of U. S. Highway 190 bridge, 0.5 mile upstream from Mesquite Creek, 0.8 mile west of Kempner, 1 mile downstream from Sulphur Creek, and 72.3 mi upstream from mouth. .
DRAINAGE AREA - 818 mi².

GAGE -

Water-stage recorder.  Satellite telemetry at station.

Datum of gage: 828.541 ft NAVD88 based on a Level 2 Static GNSS survey processed through OPUS with Ref Frame NAD83 (2011)(EPOCH:2010.0000)  ITRF2014 (EPOCH:2020.5376) and Geoid 18.  The survey was complete on 7/15/2020 while occupying a TRM that was referenced to local datum via differential levels.

Prior to 7/15/2020 the datum of the gage was 828.38 ft NGVD determined by levels. Prior to Aug. 4, 1967, at site 800 ft downstream at present datum; relocated Aug. 22, 2008.

REMARKS - Records good. Since water year 1974, at least 10% of contributing drainage area has been regulated. There are many small diversions above station for irrigation and for municipal supply. The city of Lampasas diverts water upstream from this station and returns wastewater effluent to Sulphur Creek upstream from station. Some records listed in the "Period of Record" for surface water and water quality may not be available electronically.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage since at least 1871, occurred in Sept. 1873 (stage about 45 ft). Flood of May 13, 1957, reached a stage of 37 ft, and flood of Oct. 4, 1959, reached a stage of 34 ft, from information by local residents.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - WATER YEARS 1963-1973: Maximum discharge, 71,000 ft³/s, May 16, 1965 (gage height, 32.98 ft), minimum daily, 1.4 ft³/s, July 17, 1971.
AVERAGE DISCHARGE FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - 11 years (water years 1963-73), 151 ft³/s (109,400 acre-ft/yr).
