08447000 Pecos River near Sheffield, TX
LOCATION - Lat 30°39'34", long 101°46'11" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Pecos County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 13070008, on the right bank, on the south/downstream side of the US 290 bridge. 3.9 miles east of Sheffield Texas. 5.80 miles upstream of Live Oak Creek. The water quality station is 465feet downstream of the surface water gage.
DRAINAGE AREA - 40,685 mi² of which 8,835 mi² probably is noncontributing.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1921 to April 1925, October 1939 to September 1949. October 2007 to current year (daily mean discharge below 225 ft³/s). 
GAGE - Nonrecording prior to November 8, 1939; recording thereafter. At site 3/4 mile upstream at datum 2.90 ft higher prior to April 30, 1925. Datum of gage is 2,026.60 feet above NAVD88 as determined by GNSS survey. Prior to Mar. 10, 2021, the datum of gage was incorrectly listed at 2026.30ft above NGVD29. It was found from the results of the above GNSS survey that the correct value of the datum of gage was 2025.89ft above NGVD29. Satellite telemeter at station.

REMARKS - Flow regulated to large extent by Red Bluff Reservoir near Orla, TX (station 08410000) and many diversions for irrigation between Red Bluff Reservoir and this station. Some records listed in the "Period of Record" for surface water and water quality may not be available electronically.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage known, about 23.5 ft in September 1916, site and datum in use prior to May 1, 1925, from information by local residents.

Maximum discharge, 13,800 ft³/s Oct. 8, 1941 (gage height, 16.75 ft); Maximum gage height, 16.75 ft, Oct. 8, 1941. 

Peak discharges above 225 ft³/s not computed beginning reestablishment in October 2007.

Peak GHT: 23.47 ft, event of September 11, 2008 at current site, as recorded (no HWM identified).
