LOCATION - Lat 39°21'27", long 120°29'30" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NE 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.10, T.17 N., R.13 E., Nevada County, CA, Hydrologic Unit 18020125, in Tahoe National Forest, on outlet structure on Lake Sterling Dam, 0.3 mi upstream from Fordyce Lake, and 4.7 mi northeast of Cisco.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1.02 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1999 to current year. Unpublished records for water years 1966-99 available in the files of the U.S. Geological Survey.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Elevation of gage is 6,987 ft above NGVD of 1929, from topographic map. Prior to November 2014, non-recording gage observed intermittently during the summer months.
COOPERATION - Records were collected by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, under general supervision of the U.S. Geological Survey, in connection with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission project no. 2310.
REMARKS - Records not computed during the winter months. Lake is formed by an earth-fill dam; storage began in 1877. Contents based on capacity table dated December 1978. Capacity, 1,764 acre-ft, between elevation 6,965.97 ft, invert of outlet valve, and 6,987.9 ft, spillway crest. Released water is used downstream in a power and irrigation system.
