STATION.--14046500 JOHN DAY RIVER AT SERVICE CREEK, OR
LOCATION.--Lat 44° 47'38", long 120° 00'20", in NW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.18, T.9 S., R.23 E., Wheeler County, Hydrologic Unit 17070204, on left bank 0.2 mi downstream from bridge on State Highway 207, 0.8 mi downstream from Service Creek, 0.5 mi southwest of town of Service Creek, and at mile 156.7. [location map] DRAINAGE AREA.--5,090 mi2, approximately. PERIOD OF RECORD.--March 1925 to September 1926, October 1929 to current year. Monthly discharge only March 1925 to September 1926, published in WSP 1318. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 1,632.42 ft above NGVD of 1929. See WSP 1738 for history of changes prior to Feb. 24, 1957. REMARKS.--Slight regulation by several small reservoirs upstream from station. Many small diversions for irrigation upstream from station. U.S. Geological Survey satellite telemeter at station. EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum discharge, 40,200 ft3/s Dec. 23, 1964, gage height, 17.85 ft, from rating curve extended above 14,000 ft3/s on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow; minimum discharge, 6.0 ft3/s Aug.23, 24, 1973. EXTREME FOR FEBRUARY 1996 FLOOD.--Maximum discharge, 25,800 ft3/s, Feb. 9, gage height, 14.02 ft.
