LOCATION.--Lat 39°00'44", long 78°57'23", 
      referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Hardy County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 02070001, 
      on right bank 0.2 mi downstream from Stony Creek, 3.5 mi south of Moorefield, and at mile 5.3.
DRAINAGE AREA.--277 mi2.
PERIOD OF RECORD.--June 1928 to September 1935, and August 1938 to September 1972 
      (daily discharge and peaks), October 1972 to current year (daily discharge and annual maxima).
REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 1141: 1933(M), 1940, 1942-43, 1945, 1948(M). WSP 1302: 193l(M), 
      l935(M). WDR WV-97-1: Drainage area.
GAGE.--Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 861.02 ft 
      above NAVD 88 (VERTCON conversion of 861.51 ft above NGVD 29, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers benchmark). 
      Prior to Mar. 11, 1940, nonrecording gage at Harness Ford Bridge 2.0 mi upstream at datum about 
      31 ft higher. Prior to Oct. 1, 1965, published as South Fork of South Branch Potomac River near Moorefield.
REMARKS.--Records fair, except those for periods of estimated daily discharges (ice effect), 
      which are poor. Beginning in 1973, the flow from 92.7 mi2 upstream from station has been partially 
      controlled, but not diverted, by several floodwater detention reservoirs with a total 
      combined detention capacity of 19,870 acre-ft. 
EXTREME OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Flood of May 1924 reached a stage of 13.5 ft, 
      from floodmarks, at site and datum then in use, discharge, about 28,000 ft3/s.
