04015330 KNIFE RIVER NEAR TWO HARBORS, MN
LOCATION - Lat 46°56'49", long 91°47'32" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SW 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.31, T.52 N., R.11 W., Lake County, MN, Hydrologic Unit 04010102, on right bank 600 ft downstream from bridge on U.S. Highway 61, 0.5 mi upstream from bridge on County Highway 102, in town of Knife River, 0.8 mi upstream from Lake Superior, and 7.8 mi southwest of Two Harbors. NEW gage is located in St. Louis County on the right DS bank of the South Bound HWY 61 bridge approx. 0.15 miles US of old gage location.
DRAINAGE AREA - 83.6 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - July 1974 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Elevation of gage is 640 ft above sea level (from topographic map) until 7/12/2017. Datum of gage is 616.37 ft. NAVD 1988 7/12/2017 to present.
REMARKS - Flow regulated intermittently by fish ladder operation just upstream of gage until 07/12/2017.
Daily discharge record considered good, except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD -

Maximum discharge, 25,500 ft³/s, from rating extrapolation, gage-height, 12.81 ft, June 20, 2012 Datum then in use; maximum daily-mean discharge, 11,900 ft³/s, June 20, 2012; minimum discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Dec. 2, 1976 (many days, several years).

Effective July 12, 2017, stage readings for a given discharge are higher than previous record as a result of relocating the gage upstream to MN Trunk Highway 61. The gage datum also changed as noted above. For more information, contact the USGS at the link at the bottom of the page.


WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - 2012 to Nov. 2018
COOPERATION - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
INSTRUMENTATION - Water quality monitor, which provides continuous readings. Sensor is located on the right bank approximately 30 ft above gage. Located in line with the new gage starting 7/17/2017
REMARKS - This site is part of a statewide sediment study. The objectives of the study are to collect site specific data for streamflow, cross-sectional suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) and point samples of SSC, turbidity and water transparency at selected stream sites in Minnesota.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - TURBIDITY: Maximum, 1,770 FNU, July 8, 2018; maximum daily, >565 FNU, October 3, 2017 (Possibly higher on July 9, 2018); minimum, <0.5 FNU, many days, several years.
