LOCATION - Lat 47°55'22", long 91°32'06" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SE 1/4 SE 1/4 sec.24, T.163 N., R.10 W., Lake County, MN, Hydrologic Unit 09030001, in Superior National Forest, on left bank 100 ft upstream from rapids, 2 mi upstream from South Kawishiwi River, 2.2 mi southwest of Fernberg Lookout Tower and 14 mi east of Ely.
DRAINAGE AREA - 254 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - June 1966 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 1438.23 ft. NAVD88. 
REMARKS - Daily discharge records good except for those estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 1,870 ft³/s, gage height, 6.07 ft. May 4, 2001; maximum daily-mean discharge, 1,850 ft³/s, May 3, 2001; minimum discharge, 4.5 ft³/s, Jan. 30, 1977.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: Water years, 1966-1996, 2006, 2012 to current year.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: October, 1968 to September, 1981 and April 2012 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Water temperature sensor, which provides continuous recordings. Sensor located at gage.
REMARKS - Temperature was compared independently with a calibrated thermometer. Corrections were applied based on USGS standard procedures.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Highest recorded water temperature was 83.1 degrees F (28.4 degrees C) on July 3, 2020; highest daily mean, 80.3 degrees F (26.8 degrees C) July 3, 2020; lowest recorded temperature was 32 degrees F (0 degrees C), many days, several years; lowest daily, 32 degrees F (0 degrees C), many days, several years.
