  • Notice - The USGS Water Resources Mission Area's priority is to maintain the safety and well-being of our communities, including providing critical situational awareness in times of flooding in all 50 U.S. states and additional territories. Our hydrologic monitoring stations continue to send data in near real-time to NWISWeb, and we are continuing critical water monitoring activities to protect life and property on a case-by-case basis. The health and safety of the public and our employees are our highest priorities, and we continue to follow guidance from the White House, the CDC, and state and local authorities.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

LOCATION.--Lat 40°53'40", long 74°15'58" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Passaic County, NJ, Hydrologic Unit 02030103, on upstream left bank at bridge on Interstate 80, 300 ft upstream from confluence with Singac Brook, 0.4 mi downstream from confluence with Pompton River, and 1.5 mi northwest of Singac.
DRAINAGE AREA.--740 mi².
PERIOD OF RECORD.--Continuous-record discharge station December 2012 to current year.
GAGE.--Water-stage and velocity recorder, with telemetry. Datum of gage is 155.00 ft above NGVD of 1929.
REMARKS.--Records fair, except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Flow regulated by reservoirs in Rockaway (see 01379990 and 01380900), Pequannock (see 01382100, 01382200, 01382300, 01382380, and 01382400), Wanaque (see 01383000, 01384002, and 01386990), and Ramapo River subbasins. Large diversions for municipal supply from Passaic River above Beatties Dam (see 01389490), and from Rockaway (see 01380800), Pequannock (see 01382370), Pompton (see 01388980, 01388981, 01388982), Ramapo (see 01387990), and Wanaque (see 01386980) Rivers. In addition, the New Jersey-American Water Company (formerly Commonwealth Water Company) diverts from Canoe Brook near Summit (see 01379529) and from Passaic River near Summit (see 01379510). New Jersey-American Water Company, the city of East Orange, and others also divert water for municipal supply by pumping wells in the basin. Flow includes sewage effluent from several treatment plants upstream of gage. Flows exclude inflow from the Signac Brook 200 ft downstream.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum discharge, 8,100 ft³/s, May 3, 2014, gage height, 9.65 ft; minimum discharge not determined.

Peak Flood Chart

National Weather Service flood stage for this gage is 8.5 ft.

The water temperature data for this station are temporary and will only be displayed for 120 days. Although the instrumentation is calibrated at least once/year, the temporary classification means that documented routine inspections and other quality assurance measures are not performed that would make the data acceptable for archival, retrieval, or future use in general scientific or interpretive studies.

This station managed by the New Jersey Water Science Center.
