Beginning Friday, June 13, 2014 the USGS streamgage (03293548) located on 2nd Street Bridge will no longer be the official public reference for the upper pool of the Ohio River at Louisville, KY. The 2nd Street Bridge gage is being discontinued after fourteen years of service and is being moved three miles upstream to the Louisville Water Company water tower (03292494) that is located near the intersection of Zorn Avenue and River Road. It is important to note that the water level that was regularly displayed at the 2nd Street location may not be the identical stage reading at the water tower due to the difference in elevation between the two sites.

USGS personnel will shut down the 2nd Street gage at approximately 10 a.m. EDT on June 13, 2014 and start the water tower gage at approximately 12 noon EDT that same day. Once the water tower gage is operational it will be the new public reference gage for the upper pool of the Ohio River at Louisville, KY. The water tower gage is being installed to better serve the public and local municipalities and will eventually be able to provide real-time stream discharge data for the Ohio River, making it only the fourth gage on the 981 mile long Ohio River to accomplish this task.

Water is one of six science mission areas of the U.S. Geological Survey. Water's mission is to collect and disseminate reliable, impartial and timely information that is needed to understand the nation's water resources. Streamgage data is used to forecast floods and droughts, manage flood flows, deliver water supplies, establish water rights and protect threatened aquatic habitats. The first USGS streamgage became operational January 1st, 1889 in Embudo, New Mexico. To date, the USGS operates just over 8,000 streamgages across the nation and every gage is treated with the utmost of importance. It is the duty of the USGS to provide the public with the most accurate and dependable water information that is scientifically possible.
