01171500 MILL RIVER AT NORTHAMPTON, MA
LOCATION - Lat 42°19'08", long 72°39'56" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Hampshire County, MA, Hydrologic Unit 01080201, on left bank, 5 ft downstream from Clement Street bridge near Northampton, and about 4 mi upstream from mouth. Prior to October 1, 2002, gage located on right bank, about 2.5 mi downstream, at different datum.
DRAINAGE AREA - 52.6 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 921: 1940. WSP 1231: 1940-42(M), 1944-45(M), 1948(M), 1949;WDR MA-RI-03-1: Drainage area; WDRMA05: 2005(M).
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Discharge: October 1938 to current year. October 1938 monthly discharge only, published in WSP 1301. Water-quality records: water years 1957-59, 1971, 1973, 1994, 2003-05.
GAGE - Data Collection Platform with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 169.34 ft above NAVD 1988, estimated from topographic map. Prior to May 8, 2020, datum reported as 170 ft above NGVD 1929, estimated from topographic map. Prior to Oct. 1, 2002, gage was at 140 ft elevation, at different datum, and was discontinued due to unstable channel conditions.
COOPERATION - Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Office of Water Resources.
REMARKS - Records good except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor. Prior to Oct. 1, 2002, flow regulated by mill upstream of original gage location.

Maximum peak flow 7,020 ft³/s on Aug. 28, 2011 is from rating curve extended above 6,000 ft³/s.
