USGS Water-Year Summary 2023
Valley and Ridge aquifers
LOCATION - Lat 40°07'46", long 77°24'27" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Cumberland County, PA, Hydrologic Unit 02050305, on left bank, 100 ft upstream from bridge on SR 3007, at Big Spring.
DRAINAGE AREA - 3.41 mi². Most flow at station is from a
spring, to which the contributing recharge is unknown.
PERIOD OF RECORD - November 2004 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder, water-quality monitor and crest-stage gage. Elevation of gage is 510 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929, from topographic map. Satellite telemetry at station.
COOPERATION - Station established and maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with Pennsy Supply.
REMARKS - Records for water years 2014-2015 are fair. Records for water year 2016 are fair, except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor. Records for water year 2017 are fair, except estimated discharge, which is poor. Records for water years 2018-2019 are fair. Records for water year 2020 are fair except period July - September, which is poor. Records for water year 2021 are fair except period October - July, which is poor. Records for water year 2022 are fair.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - TURBIDITY: November 2004 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Water-quality monitor acquiring readings at a 15-minute interval and interfaced with the data collection platform since November 2004.
REMARKS - Record is affected by excessive suspended algae in the water, which at times does not reflect the true turbidity. The reporting precision of the turbidity probe in low turbidity water is +/-0.3 FNU. The lowest reportable value, 0 FNU, is subject to this error and does not necessarily indicate a condition of zero turbidity. Turbidity values greater than 1000 FNU are beyond the specification of the sensor and are considered unreliable. Interruptions in the record were due to malfunctions of the equipment. Turbidity record for water years 2014-2015 is rated poor. Turbidity record for water years 2016-2017 is rated fair. Turbidity record for water year 2018 is rated poor. Beginning in water year 2019, water quality records are not rated as "excellent", "good", "fair", or "poor".
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - TURBIDITY: Maximum, >1320 FNU, Jun 8, 2015; minimum, -0.3 FNU, on many days. The maximum may have occurred on additional days; the value of recorded 1320 was determined by the limitations of the equipment.
