Click to hide Water-Year Summary instructions and information
  • Water-Year Summary reports summarize a year of hydrologic data in a printer-friendly format.
  • For water years 2014 onward, choose a water year and parameter and an on-demand Water-Year Summary report will be generated.
  • For water years 2006 through 2013, choose a water year and an Annual Water Data Report will be provided.
  • For water years 2005 and earlier, Annual Water Data Reports may be available in digital format.
  • Not all sites have reports available for every water year.

USGS Water-Year Summary 2024
01589485 JONES FALLS AT MOUTH AT BALTIMORE, MD
LOCATION - Lat 39°17'02.8", long 76°36'13.1" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Baltimore City, MD, Hydrologic Unit 02060003, on left bank, 370 ft downstream of Eastern Avenue, and 30 ft downstream of walking bridge from Fleet St to Pier 6 at Baltimore Inner Harbor.
DRAINAGE AREA - 57.5 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/dv/?site_no=01589485: 2017-2019.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - February 2017 to April 2017 (stage only); April 2017 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and velocity meter. Datum of gage is 0.00 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988.
REMARKS -
  • Water Years 2017-2019: Records poor, including those for estimated discharges.

  • This is a tidal discharge station. Discharge is computed from relations between stage vs. area and index velocity vs. mean channel velocity. U.S. Geological Survey water-data telemeter at station.
    EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum gage height, 3.40 ft, Oct 12, 2019; minimum gage height, -5.04 ft, March 3, 2018. Maximum discharge, 7,660 ft³/s, July 27, 2018; minimum discharge, -702 ft³/s, August 31, 2017.
    WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - All parameters begin February 15, 2017.  The station was discontinued on 01/02/2020. All CQW parameters were discontinued on 01/02/2020 with exception to:

SC Lower sonde:  discontinued on 10/09/18

TBY Lower sonde:  discontinued on 10/09/18

pH Lower sonde:  discontinued on 10/09/18

    NO3: discontinued on 10/09/18

    INSTRUMENTATION -

Water Quality Data, water velocity and gauge height are logged on a Campbell Scientific CR1000 data logger and transmitted every hour via Raven Modem.  Power for all components is provided solely by a bank of 10 large 12V batteries.  Data collection, logging and transmission will cease at a voltage of 11.5 V; the electronics are programmed to shut down to avoid low-voltage damage.

    Two Sub-Locations at site:

"Upper" Sub-Location:  Instrumentation is suspended beneath a floating platform (rises and lowers with the water surface) measures water quality 0.8 ft below water surface.  EXO sonde (temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity) reports values every five minutes, starting on the five minute mark.  A stand-alone SUNA Nitrate probe reports values every 15 minutes on the quarter-hour.  See image 1558 and 1563 for details:  \\IGSACNEWUSSUNMD\anrpt\Data_Archive\01589485\Images\20170215.Electronics Installation and Sonde Deployment

"Lower" Sub-Location:  Instrumentation is hung in a PVC tube (conventional deployment) at a fixed height above the stream bed measures water quality 12 ft below top of channel wall (or 14 ft below top of PVC tube, which suspends sonde approximately 1 foot above stream bed.)  EXO sonde (temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity) reports values every five minutes, starting on the five minute mark.
