LOCATION - Lat 39°30'43", long 78°02'15" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Berkeley County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 02070004, on left bank at downstream side of highway bridge, 1.3 mi southeast of Tomahawk, 3.5 mi northeast of village of Jones Springs, 9.0 mi upstream from Tilhance Creek, and at mile 11.6.
DRAINAGE AREA - 235 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 851: 1930 (M).
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1928 to September 1931 (published as Back Creek near Hedgesville), September 1938 to September 1975, October 1992 to September 1998 (annual maximum only), June 2004 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 416.12 ft above NAVD of 1988. Prior to Oct. 17, 1956, non-recording gage. Prior to Oct. 1, 1931, another site roughly 5 miles downstream at a different datum.
REMARKS - Maximum discharge, 22,400 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 6,200 ft³/s on basis of current-meter measurement of 14,500 ft³/s made at Hedgesville.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of Mar. 17, 1936, reached a stage of 25 ft, from floodmarks, present datum; discharge, 22,000 ft³/s.
