USGS Water-Year Summary 2019
LOCATION - Lat 38°44'44", long 78°38'21" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Shenandoah County, VA, Hydrologic Unit 02070006, on right bank at upstream side of bridge on State Highway 698 at Mount Jackson and 0.4 mi downstream from Mill Creek.
DRAINAGE AREA - 508 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1382: 1945, 1948-50(M), 1951-53(P), 1954(M). OFR 2006-1308: Drainage area.
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1943 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 838.55 ft NGVD of 1929. Prior to July 1, 1976, nonrecording gage, and July 1, 1976, to Oct. 23, 1981, water-stage recorder, at site 400 ft upstream at present datum.
COOPERATION - Records were provided by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality - Water Division.
REMARKS - Some diversion during low flow for irrigation at points upstream from station. Virginia Department of Emergency Services gage-height radio transmitter at station. Maximum discharge, 103,000 ft³/s, Sept. 6, 1996, from rating curve extended above 19,000 ft³/s on basis of peak runoff for stations at Cootes Store and near Strasburg.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood in October 1942 reached a stage of 20.2 ft, from floodmarks, discharge, about 80,000 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 18,000 ft³/s on basis of peak runoff for flood in October, 1942 for stations at Cootes Store and near Strasburg.
PERIOD OF RECORD - November 2006 to September 2008.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - February 2007 to September 2008.
COOPERATION - Daily records were provided by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality - Water Division.
INSTRUMENTATION - Specific conductance and water temperature monitor. Electronic data logger with 15-minute recording interval.
SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: Maximum, 552 microsiemens/cm, Aug. 11, 2007; minimum, 123 microsiemens/cm, Apr. 15, 2007.
WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum, 28.5°C, Aug. 8, 2007; minimum, 0.0°C, Jan. 4, 22, 2008.
