LOCATION - Lat 37°42'55", long 78°58'55" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Nelson County, VA, Hydrologic Unit 02080203, on right bank at downstream side of bridge on State Highway 56, 3.5 mi downstream from Hat Creek, 4.8 mi upstream from Piney River, and 6.8 mi southwest of Lovingston.
DRAINAGE AREA - 93 mi².

GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 574.551 ± 0.1 ft above NAVD 88. Prior to Sept. 15, 1969, at present site and datum of 578.39 ft NGVD of 1929. Sept. 15, 1969 to Oct. 15, 1970, nonrecording gage at present site and datum of 578.39 ft NGVD of 1929. Oct. 15, 1970 to Sept. 3, 2004, water-stage recorder at present site and datum of 578.39 ft NGVD of 1929. After Sept. 3, 2004, at present site and datum.
Gage datum was inadvertently reported as 581.39 ft from Sept. 3, 2004 to Sept. 30, 2012.
COOPERATION - Records were provided by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality - Water Division.
REMARKS - Maximum discharge, 80,000 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 7,600 ft³/s on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow. Water-quality records for some prior periods have been collected at this location.
