LOCATION - Lat 36°24'45", long 79°49'34" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Rockingham County, NC, Hydrologic Unit 03010103, on right bank 600 ft downstream of Settles Bridge on Secondary Road 2150, 3.5 mi northwest of Wentworth, 7.5 mi downstream of Mayo River, and 103.7 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1,053 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR NC-72-1: 1945 (maximum discharge). WRIR 96-4154: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - December 1939 to current year. Monthly discharge only for October 1939, published in WSP 1303.
GAGE -

Water-stage recorder. The datum of the gage is 512.37 ft above NAVD88 NAD83(2011). Satellite telemetry at streamgage.

Historical: Datum of gage is 512.98 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929.

REMARKS - Slight fluctuation and regulation at low flow caused by Talbott and Townes Reservoirs in Virginia and more proximally upstream, by operations at the Madison Water Treatment Plant in North Carolina.
Gage-height records are generally good. Discharge records are generally good except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Additional details on the accuracy of the records can be obtained by contacting the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center at gs-w-nc_nwisweb_data_inquiries@usgs.gov.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood in 1908 reached a stage of 34.9 ft, from information by North Carolina State Highway Commission, and flood in 1937 reached a stage of 29.8 ft, from information by local resident.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 56,800 ft³/s, September 18, 1945; Maximum gage height, 31.60 ft, September 18, 1945, from high-water mark in gage well. Minimum daily mean discharge, 63 ft³/s, August 12, 2002.
