LOCATION - Lat 35°47'44", long 81°53'28" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Burke County, NC, Hydrologic Unit 03050101, Burke County, on right bank 370 ft upstream from bridge on State Highway 126, 90 ft from edge of water and 10 ft off shoulder of Secondary Road 1239, 0.2 mile downstream from Shooks Creek and 0.5 mile upstream from Lake James.
DRAINAGE AREA - 66.7 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 892: 1928-29, 1935, 1937, maximum discharge; 1928-29, 1935, 1937, daily discharge. WSP 1503: 1923-26, 1930, 1932-33, 1938-39, maximum discharge; 1924-28, 1930, daily discharge; 1939, peak discharge. WDR NC-80-1: Drainage area. Gage datum was revised on October 01, 2021 based on an error in the determination of the gage datum.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - June 1922 to current year. May 1907 to August 1908 (fragmentary). Prior to 1908 published as "Linville River at Fonta Flora" and as "Linville River at Branch" 1923-70. Records for October to December 1908 "Linville River at Fonta Flora" published in WSP 242 have been found to be unreliable and should not be used.
GAGE - Data collection platform. Datum of gage is 1,202.99 ft above NAVD of 1988.  Satellite telemetry at streamgage.
REMARKS - Gage-height records are generally good. Discharge records are generally good except for estimated discharges, which are fair. Additional details on the accuracy of the records can be obtained by contacting the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center at gs-w-nc_nwisweb_data_inquiries@usgs.gov.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of July 1916 reached a stage of about 11 ft at former site and datum; discharge, 34,600 ft³/s.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge for period of record, from rating curve extended above 12,000 ft³/s on basis of slope area measurement. Maximum gage-height for period of record from high-water mark at gage.
