LOCATION - Lat 30°58'41", long 88°43'37" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in NW 1/4 SW 1/4 sec.18, T.1 S., R.7 W., George County, MS, Hydrologic Unit 03170006, St. Stephens Meridian, near right bank on downstream side of bridge on County highway between Merrill and Avent, 0.5 mi downstream from confluence of Leaf and Chickasawhay Rivers, 0.5 mi west of Merrill, and at mile 80.8.
DRAINAGE AREA - 6,590 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1930 to current year. Monthly discharge only for October and November 1930, published in WSP 1304. Daily mean gage heights published since January 1972. Gage-height records collected in same vicinity since 1904 are contained in reports of National Weather Service.
GAGE -

Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 25.87 ft above NAVD of 1988 (Reference Frame NAD_83 (2011) (EPOCH:2010.0000), (GEOID18). 

 

Prior to August 24, 2022, Datum of Gage was 26.25 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Dec. 6, 1934, nonrecording gage at same site and datum.

REMARKS - Records good, except for periods of estimated data which are poor. Satellite telemeter and National Weather Service telemeter at station.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - A flood in April 1900 reached a stage of 32.5 ft, and the flood of July 9,1916, reached a stage of 31.0 ft, from information by National Weather Service.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge 178,000 cfs; Gage height 30.66 feet; Date Feb. 27, 1961.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: November 1974 to September 1975.
WATER TEMPERATURE: April 1970 to September 1972.
