LOCATION - Lat 39°43'12", long 79°51'21" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Monongalia County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 05020004, 3.7 miles above the mouth of Cheat River and 0.3 mile above Grassy Run.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1,411 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - January 2006 to September 2012 (annual maximum and minimum water-surface elevation), October 2012 to current year (daily mean water-surface elevation).
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is -0.45 ft above NAVD88. Previously reported as 0.00 ft above NGVD29.
COOPERATION - First Energy Corporation
REMARKS - Cheat Lake was formed in 1925 by damming the Cheat River to serve the needs of a hydroelectric generating facility, the Lake Lynn Power Station. It has no flood control capability.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - As a result of a debris jam blocking the spillway, the reservoir pool reached a maximum elevation of 876.5 ft, Nov. 5, 1985.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum elevation, 870.71 ft, Mar. 4, 2015; minimum, 857.03 ft, Mar. 13, 2009.
