03198500 BIG COAL RIVER AT ASHFORD, WV
LOCATION - Lat 38°10'47", long 81°42'42" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Boone County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 05050009, on left bank at downstream side of highway bridge at Ashford, 700 ft upstream from Lick Creek, 1.0 mi downstream from Brush Creek, 1.8 mi upstream from Bull Creek, and at mile 30.2.
DRAINAGE AREA - 390 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY -

Gage height values associated with discharge measurements on May 2, 2016 and Feb. 8, 2018 were revised on Nov. 30, 2023, based on the removal of a drawdown correction that was deemed not valid.

Peak stage values for 2017-2022 water years, were revised on Nov. 30, 2023, based on the removal of a drawdown correction that was deemed not valid.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - July 1908 to September 1916, and May 1930 to current year (daily discharge and peaks). Published as Coal River at Brushton, June 1908 to September 1916 and as Coal River at Ashford, May 1930 to September 1960.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 621.75 ft above NAVD 88.  Previously published as 622.51 ft above NGVD 29. Prior to Aug. 9, 1916, nonrecording gage at site 1.0 mi upstream at different datum. May 7, 1930, to Feb. 10, 1939, nonrecording gage at present site and datum.
REMARKS - Maximum peak flow of 35,800 ft³/s from rating curve extended above 25,000 ft³/s. Maximum peak stage of 36.30 ft observed. From floodmark, site and datum then in use. The peak stage is 35.66 ft at present site and datum.
