USGS Water-Year Summary 2023
0351706800 CHEOAH RIVER NEAR BEARPEN GAP NEAR TAPOCO, NC
LOCATION - Lat 35°26'18", long 83°55'08" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Graham County, NC, Hydrologic Unit 06010204, Lat 35026'18", long 83055'08", Graham County, Hydrologic Unit 06010204, on right bank 93 ft. downstream from U.S. Forest Service bridge Number 62 on Slickrock Road, 14 ft. from edge of Highway 129, 1.7 mile upstream of mouth, and 1.2 miles east southeast of Tapoco.

REVISIONS HISTORY -

WDR NC-04-1: 2002 (annual maximum discharge).

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1999 to current year.
GAGE - Data Collection Platform. Elevation of gage is 1,271.70 ft. above NAVD of 1988. Satellite telemetry at streamgage.
REMARKS -

Considerable regulation at times caused by Santeetlah Dam, 7.5 mi upstream. Water from Santeetlah Lake, 7.5 mi upstream, is diverted to hydro powerplant on the Little Tennessee River, which bypasses gage.

Gage-height records are generally good. Discharge records are generally good except for estimated discharges, which are fair. Additional details on the accuracy of the records can be obtained by contacting the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center at gs-w-nc_nwisweb_data_inquiries@usgs.gov.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge from rating curve extended above 5,000 ft³/s on basis of step-backwater computation of peak flow.
CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - March 2015 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Tipping-bucket raingage and electronic datalogger. Satellite telemetry at site.
REMARKS - Precipitation data collected during freezing periods may not be accurately reflected in daily record.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1999 to current year.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: October 1999 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Temperature probe since October 1999. Satellite telemetry at station.
