LOCATION - Lat 44°56'25", long 72°11'23" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Orleans County, VT, Hydrologic Unit 04150500, on right bank, 100 ft upstream of small right-bank tributary, 600 ft upstream of Clyde Street bridge, 0.8 mi east of US 5 and Main Street intersection in Newport, 0.9 mi downstream of Clyde Pond Dam, and 0.9 mi upstream of mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 142 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 744: 1913(M), drainage area. WSP 924: 1940. WSP 1307: 1913-15(M).
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Discharge records: May 1909 to December 1911, April 1912 to September 1919; May 1920 to August 1922, October 1922 to September 1924, November 1928 to May 1936, September 1938 to current year. Prior to November 1928, published as "at West Derby."
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 681.82 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. May 25, 1909 to September 20, 1915, nonrecording gage, and September 21, 1915 to September 30, 1924, November 16, 1928 to May 4, 1936, water-stage recorder, at site 0.65 mi upstream at different datum. March 6, 1957 to May 11, 1994, water-stage recorder and records of power generation.

REMARKS - WATER YEARS 2014-17, 2019-2022: Records good except those for estimated discharge values, which are poor.  Water Year 2018 records good except those for August 8 to September 30, which are fair and those for estimated discharges, which are poor.

Flow regulated by power plant and reservoirs upstream. No instantaneous peak stage or discharge available for period of March 6, 1957 to May 11, 1994, due to diversion of flow around station through canal and penstock of Newport No. 11 power plant.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 3,900 ft³/s, March 20, 1936, gage height, 5.76 ft, site and datum then in use; maximum daily discharge, 3,740 ft³/s, April 29, 2011; minimum daily discharge, 2.6 ft³/s, June 18, 1956.
