LOCATION - Lat 46°54'19", long 97°03'08" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in sec.31, T.140 N., R.50 W., Cass County, ND, Hydrologic Unit 09020205, on left bank just downstream from bridge on county highway and 1.0 mi north of Mapleton.

DRAINAGE AREA - 1,480 mi² of which 70 mi² probably is noncontributing.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - DAILY DISCHARGE--April 1944 to September 1958, March 1995 to current year. April 1944 to September 1958 published as "at Mapleton". Record not equivalent at extreme high flows to station 05060000 (site 9 mi upstream), which was operated for water years 1959 to 1975, and operated as a seasonal gage beginning in March 2001.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--DAILY GAGE HEIGHT--October 2000 to current year.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 881.15 ft above North American Vertical Datum 1988 (NAVD88) and 880.43 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum 1929 (NGVD29, levels by North Dakota State Water Commission, 2004).

Previous locations and datums are as follows:

February 16, 1944, to September 30, 1958, non-recording gage at site two miles upstream at datum 886.67 ft. above NGVD29.

REMARKS -

Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for the 2019 and 2023 water years, when records were fair.  Estimated discharges are poor, unless otherwise noted.

REGULATION.--Flow regulated by Maple River Dam since completion in summer of 2007. The dam is located approximately 68 mi upstream with a flood storage capacity of 60,000 acre-ft.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum peak flow, 7,640 ft³/s, April 7, 2011, peak stage, 24.04 ft; maximum peak stage, 24.96 ft, April 8, 1997, observed, backwater from ice, may have been higher during period of no gage-height record, April 6-9, 1997.
