LOCATION - Lat 48°54'48", long 97°55'00" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SE 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.29, T.163 N., R.56 W., Pembina County, ND, Hydrologic Unit 09020316, on southeast corner of State Highway 32 bridge, 0.5 mi south of Walhalla, and 7 mi downstream from Little South Pembina River.
DRAINAGE AREA - 3,350 mi². approximately.

WSP 1388: 1943, 1950(P). WSP 1558: 1957. WSP 1728: Drainage area.

Estimated Discharges for Nov 6, 2019-Jan 5, 2020 were revised on July 10, 2020, based on international review.

PERIOD OF RECORD - DAILY DISCHARGE--October 1939 to September 1990, October 1993 to September 1995, April 2000 to current year. Water years 1993 and 1997-98, miscellaneous discharge measurements only. Prior to October 1963, published as "near Walhalla".

PERIOD OF RECORD.--DAILY GAGE HEIGHT--October 2000 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 934.62 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). Datum was converted to NAVD88 datum using the National Geodetic Survey's VDATUM transformation tool in November 2017. Prior to conversion to NAVD88, datum was published as 933.34 ft above NGVD29. 

Previous locations and datums are as follows;

November 10, 1943 to September 30, 1963, water stage recorder at site 5.5 mi upstream and at datum 33.57 ft higher.

October 1, 1939 to November 10, 1943, non-recording gage.


Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - A peak flow of 23,100 ft³/s, peak stage, 16.53 ft (from floodmark) occurred on April 25 or 26, 1997. A measured flow of 22,500 ft³/s, stage, 16.20 ft, occurred on April 26, 1997.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum peak flow, 20,600 ft³/s, May 21, 2013, peak stage, 17.25 ft; Maximum peak stage, 19.2 ft, April 18, 1950 at site 5.5 mi upstream, about 16.2 ft, at present location and datum.
