05124000 SOURIS RIVER NEAR WESTHOPE, ND
LOCATION - Lat 48°59'47", long 100°57'29" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in sec.30, T.164 N., R.79 W., Bottineau County, ND, Hydrologic Unit 09010003, on left bank 1,200 ft upstream from second crossing of international boundary, 1 mi downstream from Fish and Wildlife Service Dam 357, 7 mi northeast of Westhope, 11 mi downstream from Boundary Creek, and at mile 154.5.
DRAINAGE AREA - 16,900 mi² of which 10,300 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1338: 1932. WSP 2113: Drainage area. Daily discharges for July 5-August 1 were revised on August 27, 2012. They supersede figures published in Water-resources data US-2011, for the period January 12-August 27, 2012.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - DAILY DISCHARGE--July to October 1929, April 1930 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1308.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--DAILY GAGE HEIGHT--October 2000 to current year.
GAGE - Datum of gage is 1,403.80 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) and 1,402.45 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD29). Prior to March 28, 1938, nonrecording gage at site 6.3 mi upstream at datum 2.52 ft higher. COOPERATION - This station is one of the international gaging stations maintained by the United States under agreement with Canada.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted.

REGULATION.--Flow regulated by dams on the Souris River and tributaries, combined capacity, over 700,000 acre-ft. Diversion at Eaton Dam for irrigation of about 7,000 acres and other small diversions for irrigation and municipal supply upstream from station.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum peak flow, 30,400 ft³/s, July 5, 2011, peak stage, 22.66 ft. Instantaneous low flow, -35 ft³/s, April 8, 1943, reverse flow caused by backwater from downstream tributary inflow.
