LOCATION - Lat 41°53'30", long 87°38'30" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NW 1/4 SE 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.9, T.39 N., R.14 E., Cook County, IL, Hydrologic Unit 07120003, on right upstream side of Grand Avenue bridge in Chicago, 0.6 mi upstream from confluence with main stem of the Chicago River, and at mile 36.0.
DRAINAGE AREA - 179 mi².

GAGE - Water-stage recorder, cellular telemeter, acoustic velocity meter and water-temperature/specific conductance sensors. Datum of gage is 579.48 ft above NGVD of 1929 (Chicago City datum) (579.20 ft NAVD 1988).
REMARKS - Flow is diverted from Lake Michigan and is regulated by the Wilmette Controlling Works upstream and the Chicago River Controlling Works on the main stem of the Chicago River and the Lockport Lock and Dam. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago also discharges wastewater effluent from the Northside Treatment Plant to the North Branch of the Chicago River upstream of the gage.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - SURFACE-WATER DISCHARGE AND STAGE: Maximum discharge, 14,100 ft³/s, Aug. 22, 2002, gage height, 3.79 ft; minimum discharge, -1,850 ft³/s, Dec. 31, 2005, due to regulation or bi-directional flows, maximum stage, 5.00 ft, July 24, 2010, discharge, 6,550 ft³/s, minimum stage, -4.43 ft, March 14, 2011, discharge unknown.
WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum 27.0oC, Aug. 2, 2006; minimum 0.0oC, Dec. 28, 2008 and Jan. 17, 2009.
SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: Maximum, 5,420 uS/cm, Feb. 6, 2008; minimum, 264 uS/cm, Sept. 5, 2008.
