LOCATION - Lat 38°36'37", long 89°21'27" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in NW 1/4 SE 1/4 sec.18, T.2 N., R.2 W., Clinton County, IL, Hydrologic Unit 07140202, on downstream side of U.S. Highway 50 at Carlyle, 16.5 mi upstream from Crooked Creek, and at mile 94.0.
DRAINAGE AREA - 2,719 mi².

GAGE - Water-stage recorder, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers satellite telemeter, and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 402.56 ft NAVD 1988. Prior to July 1, 1938, nonrecording gage at site 100 ft downstream at same datum. July 1, 1938 to Sept. 30, 1940, nonrecording gage, and Oct. 1, 1940 to Oct. 4, 1976, water-stage recorder, 300 ft upstream at same datum.
REMARKS - Flow regulated since Apr. 1, 1967, by Carlyle Lake (station 05592990), 1 mi upstream from gage. Accuracy of records is discussed in the annual Station Analysis archived at the USGS IL Water Science Center.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - SURFACE-WATER DISCHARGE AND STAGE: Prior to Carlyle Lake dam (Apr. 1, 1967): Maximum discharge, 54,400 ft³/s, May 21, 1943, gage height, 33.69 ft; minimum, 11 ft³/s, Sept. 17, 1954. Since Carlyle Lake dam: Maximum discharge, 13,500 ft³/s, May 27, 2002, gage height, 23.72 ft, maximum gage height, 25.04 ft, May 8, 1970, discharge unknown; minimum, 5.25 ft³/s, Nov. 5, 2006, result of gate closure at dam.
