LOCATION - Lat 43°43'31.59", long 102°54'20.38" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NE 1/4 SW 1/4 SE 1/4 sec.03, T.4 S., R.10 E., Pennington County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10120109, at left downstream side of bridge on State Highway 40, approximately 9 mi upstream from mouth, and 18.0 mi southeast of Hermosa.
DRAINAGE AREA - 284 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - Revisions: Discharge measurement gage heights of Mar. 26, 2020 and June 12, 2020, were revised on Feb. 8, 2021, based on changes to the reference gage datum.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1950 to September 1953, October 1988 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2800.32 ft above NAVD of 1988. Oct. 1, 1950, to Sept. 30, 1953, nonrecording gage at same site and different datum.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor.  Most of the flow is diverted, except after large storm events, for irrigation of about 1,000 acres upstream from station during irrigation season. Satellite data-collection platform at station.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood in June 1972 reached a stage of about 4 ft (present datum) higher than that of May 23, 1952, from information by local resident.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 2,060 ft³/s, May 23, 1952, from rating curve extended above 110 ft³/s, gage height, 8.13 ft, different datum; minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft 3/s, Oct. 1, 1950, no flow for many days in most years.
