LOCATION - Lat 44°04'52", long 102°24'03" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NE 1/4 NE 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.02, T.1 N., R.14 E., Pennington County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10120111, on left bank at downstream side of highway bridge, 200 ft downstream from railroad bridge, 3.0 mi east of Wasta, and 8.6 mi downstream from Boxelder Creek.
DRAINAGE AREA - 12,679 mi² of which 5 mi² probably is noncontributing.

PERIOD OF RECORD - July 1914 to June 1915, August 1928 to June 1932, March 1934 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1309. Records for Feb. 19-28, 1930, published in WSP 701, have been found to be unreliable and should not be used.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2,262.16 ft above NAVD88. Prior to Aug. 1, 1940, nonrecording gage at site 50 ft upstream; Aug. 1, 1940, to Dec. 3, 1940, nonrecording gage and Dec. 4, 1940, to Sept. 30, 1968, water-stage recorder at present site all at datum 2.00 ft higher. Oct. 1, 1968, to Sept. 30, 1972, at datum 1.00 ft higher.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of May 1920 reached a stage of 18 ft, present datum, from information by local residents.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Prior to Oct. 1, 1963, maximum discharge observed, 46,300 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 11,000 ft³/s, on basis of an incomplete discharge measurement at gage height, 10.65 ft, present datum, May 6, 1932, gage height, 13.28 ft, present datum; maximum gage height observed, 14.50 ft, present datum, Jun. 13, 1915; minimum daily discharge, 1.0 ft³/s, Jul. 27, 1961.
