LOCATION - Lat 42°00'13.6", long 97°25'33.7" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in SW 1/4 SW 1/4 sec.34, T.24 N., R.1 W., Madison County, NE, Hydrologic Unit 10220001, on left bank 200 ft downstream from U.S. Highway 81 bridge, 1 mi south of Norfolk, 3.6 mi upstream from North Fork Elkhorn River, and at mile 129.
DRAINAGE AREA - 2,790 mi² of which 1,000 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1390: 1898-1900. WSP 1730: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - July 1896 to November 1903 (no winter records), October 1945 to current year. Gage height records collected at site 200 ft upstream from May 10, 1941 to Sept. 26, 1945 are contained in reports of U.S. Weather Bureau. Published as "near Norfolk" from October 1957 to September 1977.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry. Datum of gage is 1,500.95 ft above sea level. See WSP 1918 for history of changes prior to Aug. 30, 1958. Aug. 30, 1958 to July 27, 1978, water-stage recorder at site 3.2 mi upstream at datum 21.88 ft higher; and July 28, 1978 to Mar. 18, 1987, present site at datum 4.00 ft higher. Mar. 19, 1987 to Mar. 31, 1995, present site at datum 2.00 ft higher.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records fair to good except for estimated daily discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of May 13, 1944, gage height, 11.8 ft, at site 200 ft upstream, datum then in use, discharge, 14,300 ft³/s. Stage obtained from Weather Bureau records only.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum peak flow, 41,100 ft³/s, June 15, 2010, gage height, 17.22 ft.
