06821150 LITTLE PLATTE RIVER AT SMITHVILLE, MO

LOCATION - Lat 39°23'17", long 94°34'44" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NW 1/4 SW 1/4 sec.23, T.53 N., R.33 W., Clay County, MO, Hydrologic Unit 10240012, on left bank behind city equipment shelter on old bridge abutment, 500 ft upstream from town bridge in Smithville, 1,500 ft upstream from bridge on U.S. Highway 169, 0.5 mi downstream from Wilkerson Creek, 2.4 mi downstream from Smithville Lake, and at mile 11.1.

DRAINAGE AREA - 234 mi².

REVISIONS HISTORY -

WRD MO 1970: Drainage area. WDR MO-02-1: 2001(M).

7/9/21: Computed discharge from 3/19/21 to 4/28/21 was revised due to a shift change caused by updating the QM #645 mean gage height on 3/25/21 visit. Start and stop time for QM 645 found to be in error as entered, causing QM #645 to plot 100% off the computed time-series. This was missed in the first review and later identified using the OQA error report tool. Mean gage height was updated from 12.64 ft to 12.69 ft to match actual computed time-series and the indicated shift went from 0.0 to -0.05 ft.. Gage height revision warranted and computed discharge recomputed to improve accuracy. Computed discharge for this period was flagged as Revised and a Note was added. This will all be noted in the next audit.

12/4/23: Gage height and computed discharge were revised from 8/13/23 to 8/24/23 due to error in the reference reading used to reset the gage during the 8/24/23 visit. It is possible the wrong bolt was used for the RP reference reading and an erroneous reset was applied. The gage height correction computed based on the reset was therefore removed and the discharge was recomputed. The affected periods were flagged as revised and a Note was added.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - Jun 1965 to current year. Occasional measurements 1942, 1943, 1946, 1962-65.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 778.38 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (levels by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers). Prior to Mar 23, 1966, nonrecording gage at site 1,500 ft downstream at same datum.

REMARKS - Accuracy of records is discussed in the annual Station Analysis archived at the USGS MO Water Science Center. Flow considerably regulated by Smithville Reservoir (station 06821140) 2.4 mi upstream since Aug 1977.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of 1947 reached a stage of 37.4 ft.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Maximum discharge, 76,600 ft³/s, determined by slope-area measurement of peak flow, Jul 20, 1965, gage height 44.8 ft, from floodmark.
