LOCATION - Lat 35°07'23", long 90°04'39" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Shelby County, TN, Hydrologic Unit 08010100, on left bank at end of W. Illinois Avenue, 1000 ft. downstream of the I-55 bridge crossing, at Memphis, Tennessee.

DRAINAGE AREA - 932,800 mi².

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - October 2014 to current year. January 1933 to September 2014, discharge records computed by Corps of Engineers. October 1934 to September 1951 and October 1952 to September 1994 published in reports of the Geological Survey. Since November 1871, at Beale Street gage, in reports of Mississippi River Commission, December 1890 to August 1932 at Beale Street gage, September 1932 to December 1934 at non-recording gage 1000 ft. downstream, and since December 1934 water-stage recorder at present site, in reports of National Weather Service.

GAGE -

Data collection platform operated by the Corp of Engineers.  Datum of gage is 184.03 ft above NAVD of 1988, (Reference Frame NAD_83 (2011) (EPOCH:2010.0000), GEOID18).

Prior to July 13, 2023, the datum of gage was 184.002 ft, above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1988. Prior to April 16, 1934, Beale street non-recording gage 1.3 mile upstream at present datum. April 16 to December 21, 1934, non-recording gage 1,000 ft downstream at present datum.

COOPERATION - The site is operated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage, 48.69 ft, February 10, 1937; maximum discharge 2,210,000 ft³/s, May 10, 2011. Minimum discharge, 79,200 ft³/s, August 26, 1936; minimum gage height, -10.70 ft, July 10-11, 1988.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 1,640,000 ft³/s, maximum stage 39.59 ft, January 8, 2016; minimum discharge 147,000 ft³/s, minimum stage -10.81 ft, October 21 and 22, 2022.
