LOCATION - Lat 35°45'37", long 91°38'28" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in NE 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.21, T.13 N., R.6 W., Independence County, AR, Hydrologic Unit 11010004, at highway bridge on State Hwy 167 (old State Hwy 11) at south edge of Batesville, and at river mile 295.7. The gage is approximately 0.25 mi upstream of Lock & Dam No. 1, approximately 0.5 mi downstream of the mouth of Poke Bayou, and approximately 35 mi upstream of the mouth of Black River.
DRAINAGE AREA - 11,070 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Oct 1937 to Sep 1958, Oct 1986 to Sep 1994, and Oct 2000 to current year. Partial records (stage and peak discharge) Oct 1978 to Sep 1985. Stage only records Oct 1994 to Sep 2000. Gage height records for lower lock gage since 1904 are published in reports of National Weather Service.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 237.72 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Jan 28, 1939, staff gage on upper lock wall of Dam No. 1, 0.3 mi downstream at same datum.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum known discharge is 382,000 ft³/s at a stage of 31.9 ft on Feb 1, 1916, at former location, observed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Highest annual mean 12,700 ft³/s prior to regulation, water years 1938 to 1942, 10,850 ft³/s
