LOCATION - Lat 36°14'19", long 100°16'31" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Lipscomb County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 11100202, on downstream side of State Highway 305 bridge, 0.3 mi north of Lipscomb, TX, 0.6 mi downstream from Sand Creek, 2.0 mi upstream from Plum Creek, and 61.2 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 697 mi² of which 222 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1311: 1938-39, drainage area.
PERIOD OF RECORD - Oct. 1937 to Sept. 1940, monthly discharges only, published in WSP 1311, Oct. 1940 to Sept. 1942, Oct. 1961 to current year. PERIOD OF RECORD, Water-Quality.-- CHEMICAL DATA: Jan. 1964 to May 1968, May 1980. BIOCHEMICAL DATA: Jan. 1964 to May 1968, May 1980. BIOLOGICAL DATA: May 1980. PESTICIDE DATA: May 1980. GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 2,371.29 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Feb. 25, 1938, nonrecording gage, Feb. 25, 1938, to Sept. 30, 1942, water-stage recorder at present site at datum 5.77 ft higher. Satellite telemeter at station.
REMARKS - Since reactivation of gage in Oct. 1961, at least 10% of contributing drainage area has been regulated. There are small diversions upstream from station for irrigation and recreation. No flow at times. Some records listed in the "Period of Record" for surface water and water quality may not be available electronically.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage since 1890, 15.5 ft June 23, 1957, present site and datum, from floodmarks. A flood in May 1955 reached a stage of 12.1 ft, present site and datum, from information by Texas Department of Transportation.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - WATER YEARS, 1938-1942: Maximum discharge, 20,000 ft³/s Oct. 21, 1941 (gage-height, 11.57 ft, present datum), from rating curve extended above 14,000 ft³/s on basis of velocity-area studies. No flow at times.
AVERAGE DISCHARGE FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - 5 years (water years 1938-1942), 39.7 ft³/s, 28,760 acre-feet/yr.
