LOCATION - Lat 29°52'34", long 95°05'37" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Harris County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 12040104, on left bank at U.S. Highway 90 bridge, 0.3 mi downstream from Southern Pacific Railway Co. bridge, 1.5 mi east of Sheldon, 4.6 mi downstream from Lake Houston, and 21 mi northeast of Houston.
DRAINAGE AREA - 2,879 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Feb. 1970 to Sept. 1972 (elevations only), Oct. 1972 to Aug. 2020 (gage heights only), Aug. 2020 to current year (daily mean discharge).
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and water-velocity recorder. Datum of gage is NAVD 1988. Prior to Oct. 1 2009, datum of gage was 0.69 ft below NGVD of 1929, adjustment of 1973 (0.98 ft above current datum). Prior to Oct. 1972, datum of gage was NGVD of 1929 (levels by Harris County Flood Control District) unadjusted for land-surface subsidence. Radio telemeter at station. Satellite telemeter at station.
REMARKS - Gage heights reflect tidal fluctuations. Twelve discharge measurements, May 19, 1989 to Oct 18, 2006. Some records listed in the "Period of Record" for surface water and water quality may not be available electronically. Daily mean discharge determined after applying Godin Filter to remove tidal effects from unit values.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum elevation since at least 1875, 31.5 ft Nov. 26, 1940, at site 0.3 mi upstream at Southern Pacific Railway Co. bridge.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum gage height, 28.72 ft, Aug. 29, 2017 (Hurricane Harvey); minimum gage height, -3.18 ft, Jan. 16, 2022. A discharge measurement of 356,000 ft³/s was made near a peak of Oct. 19, 1994, gage height, 27.00 ft. (datum then in use).
