LOCATION - Lat 32°51'45", long 98°18'08" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Palo Pinto County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 12060201, on upstream side of Farm Road 4 bridge, 300 ft downstream from Dark Valley Creek, 6.5 mi north of Palo Pinto, and at mile 667.3.
DRAINAGE AREA - 23,811 mi² of which 9,566 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1512: 1924-25, 1929, 1932-34. WSP 1712: 1935-36, 1937-38(M), 1939, 1940(M). WDR TX-76-2: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Feb. 1924 to current year. Prior to Oct. 1933, published as "near Mineral Wells".
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 834.23 ft above NGVD of 1929; 828.86 ft above NAVD of 1988. Prior to Nov. 15, 1933, nonrecording gage at site 19 mi downstream at datum 38.19 ft lower. Nov. 15, 1933, to Apr. 10, 1989, at location 125 ft upstream from present site at datum 3.00 ft higher. Satellite telemeter at station.
REMARKS - Some records listed in the "Period of Record" for surface water may not be available electronically. Since 1941, at least 10% of contributing drainage area has been regulated. No known diversions.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage occurred in 1876, from data by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and was several feet higher than the flood of June 16, 1930, which reached a stage of about 30 ft and was the highest since at least 1876.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - WATER YEARS, 1924-1940: Maximum discharge, 95,600 ft³/s, June 16, 1930, gage height 28.43 ft, at site and datum then in use; no flow at times.
AVERAGE DISCHARGE FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - 16 years (water years 1925-40) prior to completion of Possum Kingdom Lake, 1,262 ft³/s (724,700 acre-ft/yr).
