LOCATION - Lat 32°32'20.95", long 101°03'18.80" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Scurry County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 12080002, on right upstream bank of bridge on State Highway 350, 12.4 river mi. downstream of the Lake J.B. Thomas dam, 15.8 river mi. upstream from the confluence with Deep Creek, and 4.5 mi. southwest of Ira, TX.
DRAINAGE AREA - 3,483 mi² of which 2,371 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR TX-81-3: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Oct. 1947 to Sept. 1952 (monthly records only 1950-52), Oct. 1958 to Sept. 30, 1989, July 2016 to current year (peaks above base discharge).
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 2,136.808 ft. above NAVD88 (former datum of the gage was 2,134.15 ft. above NGVD29). Oct. 1-30, 1947, nonrecording gage at site 75 ft. upstream of former gage at former datum. Satellite telemeter at site.
COOPERATION - Texas Water Development Board, (TWDB).
REMARKS - Since July 1952, flow has been largely regulated by Lake J.B. Thomas (station 08118000) 12.4 river mi. upstream.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of June 16, 1913 (gage height, 32 ft. at former datum), was the greatest since at least that date, from information by local resident. Flood in May 1947 reached a stage of 25.1 ft. (former datum), from floodmark at site of former bridge, 269 upstream from gage.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 20,500 ft³/s July 6, 1948 (gage-height, 21.35 ft. at former datum), from rating curve extended above 9,600 ft³/s by slope-conveyance method; maximum gage height (at former datum), 22.84 ft. May 15, 1980 (from shift in rating); no flow at times most years.
AVERAGE DISCHARGE FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - 31 years (water years 1959-89) regulated, 9.32 ft³/s (6,750 acre-ft/yr).
AVERAGE DISCHARGE FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - 5 years (water years 1948-52) prior to completion of Colorado River Dam, 50.5 ft³/s (36,590 acre-ft/yr).
