08386000 PECOS RIVER NEAR ACME, NM
LOCATION - Lat 33°34'18.68", long 104°22'24.97" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Chaves County, NM, Hydrologic Unit 13060007, on downstream side U.S. Highway 70, 1.7 mi downstream from Salt Creek, 2.7 mi southwest of Acme, 16 mi northeast of Roswell, and at mile 583.3.
DRAINAGE AREA - 11,380 mi². (approximate contributing area)
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - September 1921 to June 1923, July 1937 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1312.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry. Datum of gage is 3512.88 ft above NAVD88 as determined by a GNSS Level II rapid-static survey performed by the USGS on January 29, 2021. Prior to July 28, 2009, at site on right bank 3 mi downstream at different datum. Prior to Nov. 1, 1938, at downstream site at various datums. Since Oct. 25, 1963, supplemental water-stage recorder at downstream site, opposite bank, at same datum.
REMARKS - Water years 2014-2023; records fair except for estimated discharges and period from May 1, 2022 to June 16. 2022, which are poor. Flow regulated by Lake Sumner (station 08384000) 117 mi upstream since August 1937 and Santa Rosa Lake (station 08382810) 172 mi upstream since April 1980. Diversions for irrigation of about 20,000 acres, 1959 determination, upstream from station.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - The flood of May 28, 1937, reached a discharge of 53,000 ft³/s, gage height, 14.82 ft, from floodmarks, site and datum then in use, from slope-area measurement, but may have been exceeded by the flood of Oct. 1, 1904.
