LOCATION - Lat 37°09'46", long 113°23'40" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NE 1/4 NE 1/4 SW 1/4 sec.02, T.42 S., R.14 W., Washington County, UT, Hydrologic Unit 15010008, on right bank, 1.8 mi downstream of Quail Creek Reservoir Dam, at upstream side of SR-9 bridge, 5.2 mi west of Hurricane.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1,493 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - Prior to February 9, 2021 the datum of the gage was 2,836.33 ft above NGVD of 1929 from a Utah Department of Transportation right-of-way marker.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - March 1967 to February 1989, October 1990 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2,739.42 ft. above NAVD of 1988 from a Level II GNSS survey conducted on February 9, 2021. March 20, 1967 to February 14, 1989 at site 100 ft downstream at different datum; October 1, 1990 to March 30, 1993 at site 0.1 mi downstream at different datum; March 30, 1993 to July 31, 2008 at site 1.2 mi upstream at different datum.
REMARKS - Records generally good except estimated discharges and flows over 500 ft³/s which are fair to poor, due to lack of rating definition above 500 ft³/s. Since 1985, flow diverted about 14 mi upstream into a pipeline that feeds Quail Creek Reservoir (capacity 40,000 acre-feet), an off-stream reservoir 1.8 mi upstream of gage, and since 2003 into Sand Hollow Reservoir (capacity 51,400 acre-feet), an off-stream reservoir 2.8 mi southwest of gage. Flow subject to releases from Quail Creek Reservoir.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage known since at least 1909, 17.34 ft, Dec 6, 1966, from floodmarks; discharge, 20,100 ft³/s, from slope-area measurement, site and datum established Mar 1967.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, about 66,000 ft³/s, Jan 1, 1989, from slope-area measurement of Quail Creek Reservoir dike failure; minimum daily discharge, 22 ft³/s, Aug 29, 2002.
