LOCATION - Lat 48°39'37", long 121°14'47" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NW 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.28, T.37 N., R.12 E., Whatcom County, WA, Hydrologic Unit 17110005, North Cascades National Park, on right bank 1.2 mi south of Newhalem, 1.5 mi downstream from East Fork, and at mile 1.5.
DRAINAGE AREA - 26.9 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR-WA-2009: Drainage area. WDR-WA-2008: 2003. WDR WA-84-1: 1983.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - January 1961 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Elevation of gage 1,000 ft above NGVD 1929, from river profile map. Prior to January 2, 2009 recording gage at site 0.5 mi. upstream at different datum. Elevation of gage is 1,080 ft above NGVD of 1929, by barometer. Prior to October 1981, at datum 0.96 ft lower.
REMARKS - No regulation or diversion upstream from station. U.S. Geological Survey satellite telemeter at station.
  • Water Year 2014: No estimated daily discharges. Records fair except for discharges above 400 ft³/s, which are poor.
  • Water Year 2015: Records fair except for discharges above 400 ft³/s and estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
  • Water Year 2016: Records fair except for period October 31 to February 8, February 23 to April 26, discharges above 400 ft³/s and estimated daily discharges, which are poor.
  • Water Year 2017: Records fair except for discharges above 400 ft³/s and estimated daily discharges, which are poor.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 8,430 ft³/s, Dec. 26, 1980, gage height, 9.14 ft datum then in use, from floodmarks, from rating curve extended above 5,570 ft³/s on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow; minimum daily discharge, 17.5 ft³/s, Oct. 5, 2017.

INSTRUMENTATION - Water-temperature sensor with a 15-minute logging interval, interfaced with a data collection platform for satellite telemetry.
REMARKS -
  • Water Year 2018 and 2020: Water-temperature records excellent.
  • Water Year 2019: Water-temperature records excellent for except Feb. 7 to June 4, which are good. No record Feb. 10-12, 27, March 4 and 5.
